Baby's nest #6 - Sewing my first softie (coudre mon premier doudou)

Hello everyone !
My dear husband's had to go for the week-end, and I'm "all by myyyseeelllff !!!!" till tomorrow. So this afternoon I've had a date ... with my sewing machine ! And I created my very first softie. I'm not quite sure it has a particular pet design, I don't know exactly what it is to be honest. He's a just a funny little guy for my baby to play with in a couple of months. And it's so simple to make, I think I'll sew more weird toys very soon ... Here's a pattern, just to give you the general technique for it, but don't be afraid of designing your own softie, the only limit here is your imagination !
So, do you like him ? How should I name him, any idea ?

Mon mari adoré a du s'absenter ce week-end, alors je suis "all by myyyseeellff !" jusqu'à demain. Cet après-midi, j'ai donc eu un rencard ... avec ma machine à coudre ! Et j'ai fabriqué mon tout premier doudou/peluche. Je ne suis pas sûre qu'il ait une forme particulière, il ne ressemble pas à grand chose à vrai dire, du moins à aucun animal connu, c'est juste un petit bonhomme marrant qui j'espère plaira à mon bébé dans quelques mois. Et c'est super simple à faire, je sens que plein d'autres doudous bizarres viendront rejoindre bientôt ce premier essai. Voici un tuto qui vous donnera la technique générale pour la réalisation, mais n'hésitez pas à créer vos propres formes de doudous, là l'imagination est sans limite !
Il vous plaît ? Comment devrais-je l'appeler, des suggestions ?

Baby's nest #5 - Making a baby sleeping-bag (1ère turbulette maison pour bébé)

For safe nights, it's strongly recommended to keep blankets away from the crib during your baby's first months, and to use sleeping-bag to keep him/her warm without any chocking risk.
Pour des nuits paisibles et sûres, il est particulièrement recommandé de ne pas mettre de couvertures dans le lit des touts-petits, et d'utiliser des gigoteuses / turbulettes pour tenir bébé au chaud sans risque d'étouffement.

This is the 1st one that I make, and it won't be the last. I'll sew more, for exemple :
- once the final fabric for the crib bedding is chosen,
- for different temperatures (baby's due in june - this one as fleece on the back, so although it's super comfy, it might be a little too warm for some summer nights, we'll see),
- and for different ages (babies grow so fast ...) !
Cette turbulette est ma 1ère, et ça ne sera pas ma dernière. Je vais en coudre d'autres :
- une fois que les tissus définitifs du linge de lit (tour de lit notamment) seront choisis,
- pour des températures différentes (le bébé arrive en juin, et j'ai fait cette 1ère gigoteuse avec un dos en polaire, très confortable mais qui pourrait être trop chaud selon les nuits)
- et bien sûr selon la croissance du petit bout (ça grandit tellement vite !)

I've used this pattern. It's not very hard to make and totally worth it when you see the prices of these kind of products in stores !
J'ai utilisé ce tuto, bien connu de la blogosphère (l'avez-vous déjà utilisé ? Je serais heureuse de voir vos turbulettes faites maison !). Ce n'est pas très dur à faire, même pour moi qui suis débutante en couture, et ça vaut carrément le coup quand on connaît le prix de ces petites choses en magasin (avec des looks parfois un peu kitch, et surtout fille ou garçon - peu de choix mixte).

All is left to do now is to sew buttons on the braces.
Tout ce qui me reste à faire, c'est coudre les pressions sur les bretelles.

Although I've used a blue ribbon here, but it's not a "we're-having-a-baby-boy" big reveal,
I just thought it was cute, even for a girl
(a bit "Tiffany style" - which I love, see here) !

I can't wait to sew another one with different colours and textures ! I've just ordered new great fabric samples.
I'll write a message about the nursery style soon, but I guess you have already a general idea with this project, and this one, and this one. In a word : COLOUR !!
Je suis impatiente d'en refaire d'autres, avec des couleurs et des textures différentes ! Je viens d'ailleurs de commander de nouveaux tissus.
J'écrirai un post bientôt sur le style général de la chambre du bébé, mais je pense que vous avez déjà un petit aperçu avec ce dernier projet, et celui-ci, ou encore celui-là. En un mot : de la COULEUR !

Baby's nest #4 - A colourful and cosy blanket for Baby (une couverture colorée et cosy pour bébé)

Look what I've been up to between 5 and 7 pm : I've made a blanket for our baby. For now, it's still "gender neutral", with green and grey fabrics (and some fleece on the back), but once the baby's here, I might add another colour (blue or pink, for instance).
Regardez ce que j'ai bidouillé entre 5 et 7 : j'ai cousu une couverture pour notre bébé. Pour l'instant, c'est une version "neutre", avec des tissus verts et gris (et une doublure en polaire - c'est tout doux !) mais je pourrais bien la personnaliser lorsque bébé sera là (en rose ou en bleu ...).

Baby's nest #3 - Making a bird mobile (coudre un mobile oiseaux pour bébé)

Hello there ! I know, I know, I have been away for a while, I'm sorry. One of the reason is that I've been working like crazy with my sewing machine for the nursery, and that also means a lot of fabric shopping.
Coucou tout le monde ! Je sais, je sais, je n'ai pas été très assidue ces derniers temps et j'ai un peu délaissé le blog au profit de ma machine à coudre, et de nombreuses heures dans les magasins de tissus de Nantes (Toto, Mondial Tissu, Myrtille ...).

I've had the hardest time finding beautiful fabrics that don't scream "BABY". I don't know about you, but I find the baby fabric, and a lot of baby related items as a matter of fact, quite tacky. And let's face it : especially during the first years of your baby, the decoration is mostly for your eyes, so let's choose fabric YOU like !
J'ai le plus grand mal à trouver de beaux tissus pour la chambre du bébé, surtout que la plupart des tissus pour enfant que je trouve me semblent un peu "gnagnan", je ne m'attarde pas dans ce rayon la plupart du temps. D'une manière générale, je ne suis pas fan des objets de déco pour bébé, alors je vais faire pas mal de choses par moi-même pour que ce soit à notre goût ! Chacun voit midi à sa porte comme on dit. Et puis, soyons honnêtes, la déco, c'est surtout pour les parents, alors autant que ça nous plaise avant tout !

I want the nursery to be joyful, neutral (we don't want to know the sex of the baby), and modern. Most of the furniture won't come from baby stores and I have plenty of time to DIY some fun "art" ! We will be spending a lot of time in this room, so I also want it to be comfortable for us.
J'aimerais que la chambre soit joyeuse, neutre (nous ne souhaitons pas connaître le sexe du bébé), et moderne. La plupart des meubles ne seront pas achetés en magasin de bébé, et j'ai tout le temps de faire moi-même le reste de la déco. Nous passerons beaucoup de temps dans cette pièce (surtout moi qui compte allaiter), alors je la veux aussi confortable que possible.

One of the first thing I wanted for the nursery was a beautiful mobile. I didn't find any that I liked in our local stores nor on the internet, so I decided to make one on my own. I've been dreaming of a bird mobile ever since I've seen this famous one.
Une des premières choses sur lesquelles je me suis penchée est le mobile. Je n'en ai trouvé aucun à mon goût en magasin ou sur internet, je l'ai donc fait moi-même. J'adore ce modèle bien connu dans la blogosphère, notamment américaine.

But I did want the mobile to be attached to the crib (we rent our appartment, and we can't do any hole in the ceiling), and to play music. And I also wanted a very specific music, the Brahms Lullaby (it was my baby music, and I LOVE it !), so I orderded the mecanism on internet and I bought a random white plastic mobile in a local store (the music on it is "Over the rainbow" which is quite cool too, and we might switch from time to time).
Mais je voulais que le mobile soit attaché au lit (nous ne pouvons pas faire de trous dans le plafond !), et qu'il soit musical. Je voulais aussi une mélodie bien précise : la berceuse de Brahms (c'était ma berceuse quand j'étais petite, et je l'adore), donc j'ai commandé le mécanisme sur internet (car pas moyen de trouver un mobile avec cette musique en magasin - c'est étonnant non ?). J'ai ensuite acheté un mobile en promo pour avoir la structure (le mécanisme sur celui-là joue "Over the Rainbow", ce qui est plutôt sympa, nous pourrons changer de temps en temps).

Then I took different pieces of fabric that will be used in the room and after a few hours of sewing according to this pattern (see here - link on the left),  and a lot of patience, the mobile was done.
Ensuite, j'ai utilisé une sélection de tissus que nous allons utiliser dans la pièce et je me suis basée sur ce tuto - cliquer sur "Bird Pattern" dans la colonne de gauche (en anglais, mais très simple à suivre). Après quelques heures de patience le mobile était terminé.

 

All we need now is a crib !
Tout ce qui nous manque maintenant est un lit !

I've find them fun and super easy to make for a unique and personalized result. And we'll be able to change the mobile decor at any time, as the birds are just tied to it with ribbons. I've "tried" it on my 2 months old adorable neighbour, and he seamed to enjoy it, so I guess our baby will like it as well !
J'ai trouvé ça super facile et très sympa à faire, pour un résultat unique et personnalisé. En plus, nous pourrons à tout moment changer le décor du mobile, car les oiseaux ne sont attachés que par des rubans noués. Je l'ai "testé" sur mon petit voisin agé de 2 mois, et il a eu l'air de bien apprécier, alors je suppose que notre bout d'chou aimera aussi.

They look great in a baby room, but they could also be fun in a living-room or anywhere else in the house ! It's a good idea for a baby shower/birth homemade gift, and I guess the birds can be used by the baby as toys (without the ribbon).
Bien sûr, ce mobile est génial pour une chambre de bébé, mais il pourrait être tout aussi bien dans un salon ou dans n'importe quelle pièce de la maison. C'est aussi une bonne idée de cadeau pour une naissance ou un baptême, et je suppose que les oiseaux pourraient servir de jouets pour un bébé assez grand (sans les rubans bien sûr).

I've done other things too, like this cute cube (in about 15 min !) - pattern available here, and some other fun stuff I'll share with you next week.

My belly is growing so fast (the picture was taken last week, 16 weeks pregnant). Next week, I'll start the 5th month, yay !
Mon ventre grossit tellement vite (photo prise la semaine dernière, 16 semaines de grossesse - à peu près). La semaine prochaine, j'attaque le 5ème mois !

Baby's nest #2 - Creating a pretty big nursery by transforming the kitchen ...

In my last post, I told you about our project to move our bookcase from the guest-room (nursery to be) to the kitchen. So guess what we did yesterday night ? Yes, we gave our kitchen a great makeover just by moving some furniture, and I absolutely LOVE the result ! And now the nursery looks so much bigger (this baby is already spoiled ...).
Dans mon dernier post, je vous ai parlé de notre projet de déplacer notre bibliothèque de la chambre d'amis/bureau/future chambre de bébé vers la cuisine. Alors devinez ce qu'on a fait hier soir ? Et oui, nous avons relooké notre cuisine juste en changeant un meuble, et je suis super fan du résultat ! Non seulement nous avons gagné en rangement dans la cuisine (qui en avait grand besoin), mais en plus, maintenant la chambre du bébé paraît tellement plus spacieuse (ce bébé est déjà gâté ...)

Amazing ! Some much more storage, and as a bonus, the dark wood totally matches our countertop. Thank you my sweet husband, and my darling sister for helping me, poor-pregnant-lady-who-cannot-carry-anything-heavy, to give this kitchen a great makeover without getting my credit card out !
Incroyable ! Tellement plus de rangement et, cerise sur le gâteau, le bois foncé est tout à fait coordonné avec notre plan de travail. Merci à mon gentil mari et à mon adorable soeur pour avoir aidé une pauvre-femme-enceinte-qui-ne-peut-rien-porter-de-lourd à relooker sa cuisine sans sortir sa carte bleue !

Baby's nest #1 - Getting the place organized (réorganiser l'espace avant bébé)

Another great thing about expecting (besides eating a bit more than usual without feeling guilty - especially when your cravings are mostly clementine/orange related, so I guess it's ok ...) is that it makes you reorganize the entire home to make room for the baby, and it's a great time to get organized and to take advantage of every inch available in the place.
Une autre joie inhérente à la grossesse (au delà des fringales souvent assouvies sans scrupules, d'autant qu'en ce moment, ce sont plutôt des envies d'agrumes, donc ça va ...) est la réorganisation de toute la maison pour accueillir le bébé, et c'est un excellent prétexte pour optimiser le rangement de chaque espace!

Now, about the nursery itself : we are lucky enough to have a 2 bedroom condo. One of them was until now a guest-room/home office. We've decided to have it dedicated exclusively to the baby, so the bookcase+desk+bed have to go.
Alors, la chambre du bébé en elle-même : nous avons la chance d'avoir 2 chambres. Une d'elles était jusqu'à présent une chambre d'amis/bureau. Nous avons décidé de la dédier exclusivement au bébé, donc le lit+bureau+bibliothèque doivent partir.

• the sofa bed was very old, so we threw it away, we will welcome our guests on a air mattress for a while ; le canapé-lit était très vieux - il nous servait de canapé quand nous habitions encore à Paris, et déjà là, il portait bien le poids de ses 20 ou 25 ans ...  donc nous l'avons jeté. les invités dormiront sur un matelas gonflable pendant quelques temps.

• the desk (found a short time ago in a thrift store) will go in our garage, waiting for a bigger house. The computer will go in our bedroom or in the living-room, we're not sure yet ;le bureau (trouvé il y a peu à Troc.com) sera remisé dans notre garage en attendant un futur déménagement dans une maison plus grande. L'ordi ira dans notre chambre ou dans le salon, nous n'avons pas encore décidé.

• but the bookcase is going to be relocated ... in the kitchen ! mais la bibliothèque sera elle relocalisée ... dans la cuisine !

So our first challenge here was to find another place for all our books because in the kitchen the bookcase will be used as a kitchen cabinet and no longer as a library.
Donc, en toute logique, notre premier challenge a été de trouver de la place pour ranger tous nos livres, parce qu'une fois dans la cuisine, le meuble nous servira ... de meuble de cuisine, et plus de bibliothèque.

Our solution : taking advantage of every spare space with basic Ikea shelves. I am now an official-pregnant-Ikea-shelves-building-expert !
Notre solution : tirer parti de tous les petits espaces mal ou pas utilisés de la maison en y installant des étagères Ikea basiques. Je suis donc maintenant officiellement experte ès montage d'étagères Ikea !

The vintage-50s-chest was also thrifted a few months ago, it will be used in the nursery.

Actually, I'm already working on it ... and no, I'm not moving furniture myself - it's one of the privilege of being knocked up - that'll be a job for my husband and my helpful sister Gabrielle visiting this week-end.
Prochaine étape, déplacer la bibliothèque dans la cuisine. J'ai hâte !
En fait, je suis déjà en train de travailler dessus ...  non, je ne déménage rien moi-même - c'est un des privilèges d'être enceinte - ça, c'est un job pour Doudou et ma soeur Gabrielle en visite chez nous ce week-end.

1st time in my life that I'm proud of my belly !!

I don't usually feel so great about my body, but ever since I got pregnant, I don't care anymore about my curves, I even enjoy them ! Of course, I use many lotions and oils to prevent stretch marks ...
Je ne suis d'habitude pas particulièrement à l'aise avec mon corps, mais bizarrement, depuis je suis enceinte, mes courbes me gênent beaucoup moins ... mieux que ça : j'en suis fière ! Bien sûr, j'applique religieusement des crèmes anti-vergetures au cas où, car tout ça pousse très vite !

I started showing quite quickly, and now that I'm starting the 2nd trimester, I can't hide anymore my growing belly. I feel great (despite a feet sprain from falling yesterday !!) and even if I can't feel the baby yet, he/she's already the most important person in the world for us ! I still can't believe I'm a mommy-to-be ...
J'ai eu du ventre très tôt (dès le 2ème mois !) et maintenant que j'attaque le 2ème trimestre, je ne peux définitivement plus le cacher ! Je me sens super bien (malgré une entorse suite à une chute chez moi hier, super ...), et même si je ne peux pas encore sentir le bébé bouger, il/elle est déjà la personne la plus importante au monde pour nous ! Je n'arrive toujours pas à réaliser que je vais être maman dans si peu de temps ...

The 1st sonogram was a beautiful experience, especially when we heard this little heart beating so fast ! Here's his/her very first official picture !!
La 1ère échographie a été une expérience très émouvante, particulièrement quand nous avons entendu pour la 1ère fois son petit coeur battre si vite ! Voici la toute première photo officielle de l'héritier/ère !

Already so cute (at 10 weeks of pregnancy - about a month ago) !
The baby was moving so much, it was unbelievable to see him/her doing Pilates in my belly without feeling anything !
Next sonogram in February, I can't wait !
Déjà si mignon (écho à 10 semaines de grossesse, il y a 1 mois) !
Le bébé bougeait tellement, c'était incroyable de le voir faire du Pilates dans mon ventre sans rien sentir !

(we don't want to know the sex before the birth, but I have this weird feeling ever since the begining that it's gonna be a boy ... it will be hard to wait until June to find out !)

I've spent mine with my family and some friends, enjoying a great meal (my husband is a very good cook, I'm so lucky !) and drinking a lot of sparkling water as I can't drink alcohol for a few months (which is quite hard when you live in France and you like Bordeaux wine as much as I do ...).

Nous avons réveillonné avec ma famille et quelques amis, autour d'un bon repas (mon mari est un super cuistot, je suis une veinarde), et avec beaucoup d'eau pétillante pour remplacer le champagne que je ne peux pas boire pendant quelques mois (je me suis quand même accordé une demi-flûte avec l'accord de mon médecin ...)

Now, we're just watching a classic cow-boy movie by the fireplace, and we'll be eating the remaining excellent food from yesterday for dinner.

Maintenant, c'est après-midi télé-thé-près de la cheminée, et nous mangerons les restes d'hier au dîner (un faux dimanche en famille en quelque sorte...)

We've been away from home for the last 2 weeks (1 week at my in-laws - for Christmas - and this week at my parents : around 1000 kms away from each ... we're lucky to have a good car !), and we're going back on Sunday. Next week, I'll have a lot of things to share with you guys.

Nous sommes en vadrouille depuis 2 semaines (semaine de Noël chez mes beaux-parents dans le Nord, et cette semaine chez les miens en Bretagne, heureusement que nous avons une bonne voiture !), et nous rentrons ce dimanche à Nantes. J'aurai plein de choses à vous raconter la semaine prochaine.
